TIESTO IN CONCERT II (BLACK HOLE RECORDINGS)

This new DVD from Black Hole Recordings, is every bit as fresh and energetic as you'd expect. More so, even. Right from the beginning when the camera swirls into a massive raving crowd with Tiesto at the center in a sci-fi control board configuration, lights blazing, you know you're in for a treat. And when the massive trance music comes thumping in, your beliefs are confirmed; faith in the DJ finds its justification. The music is instantly absorbing and overwhelming... in a good way. So many trance mixes are out there these days and so many of them are pedestrian and lackluster. Tiesto injects life into a genre that many have felt is failing or at least faltering with every release he issues, and this is no exception. The beats are forceful but not uberaggressive, as with hard house, say, bringing an invigorating energy to the proceedings. The soaring, high energy melodies are, pardon the pun, entrancing. Only the heartless could be immune to the radiant energy lighting up the stratosphere. I do have one gripe, though. Remember those swirling cameras? The editing in this DVD is rather annoying. It's one quick, dodgy cut after another, like postmodern action camerawork on crystal meth. You're never given a shot long enough to get a grip on what you're seeing before another edit kicks in. I do realize I'll probably be in the minority on this. And it is a small gripe. Most will find it a fitting complement to the rushing music (which is the real point of this, anyway). -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
