MARK FARINA - MUSHROOM JAZZ 5 (OM)

Continuing to assault the ears of the world with a beautiful ebb tide of San Francisco House music, OM Records does it once again with another unbelievable release from an American DJ-ing legend. From everybody’s favorite little flip-flop wearing DJ, Mark Farina, comes the fifth installment of his now-classic Mushroom Jazz series, featuring more of the blissed-out Nu-Jazz and uber-underground Hip-Hop riddims and rhymes we have all come to know and love so dearly. On the exact opposite of the “jackin’ house” spectrum in the wide-ranging OM arsenal is “The Little Dictator of Downtempo” who gives all of us Hip-Hop-loving white guys credibility worldwide. His tasty soup of Jazz-laden grooves and Rap harmonies is always a true treat, as is volume number five, with appearances by J Boogie, DJ Numark (and Chali 2na), Zion I, DJ Spinna, DJ Des, Starving Artist Crew, Pete Rock, Thes One, and many others, for an amazing 21 tracks in all! Like many of OM’s past offerings, this outstanding release features beautifully orchestrated drum beats that carry each and every song all the way through. An honorable mention must be made to whomever (if it isn’t the DJ himself) orchestrated the track programming. The selection of the order of which song follows another is quite possibly the most underrated aspect of any mix compilation, and remarkably, I couldn’t imagine this disc with any track listing other than the one it currently holds.-- review by Carl Noone, Jr.
