BASSNECTAR - MESMERIZING THE ULTRA (ORGANIC MUSIC)

If Crystal Method got into a fist fight with a bunch of stoned hip-hoppers, this is kinda what you'd expect it to sound like. Driven largely by mid-tempo to slightly chilled beats that sound like TCM phased down groovin' and jammin' to some hip-hop touched by house and maybe just a tad of German minimalist techno, Bassnectar is a little odd and will probably captivate some people while making others scratch their heads or say, "Pshaw." Not, mind you, that I'm aware of anybody that actually says "pshaw." Which is beside the point. I think I fall somewhere in the headscratcher/pshaw territory. Not so much of the pshaw, though. I can't dismiss this outright or tell you that it sucks. I can tell you that it aspires to having infectiousness in its grooves, but I'm not sure it's a total success. Or, I'm not sure if it IS a success but my general disconnect with hip-hop culture (which heavily infuses this, though is is not hip-hop, per se). If i was driving around town, slowly, after smoking a blunt, I'd probably groove myself to death on this. As for just popping it in and listening to it, well, that's slightly more iffy. I suppose it depends on my mood. And how high I am, quite frankly. Now, thing is, the more you listen to it, the more you do learn to respect what you're hearing. And the more you realize there is some infectiousness here. But it requires the patience demanded by prog. This isn't progressive, of course, but it shares a principle. Give it a chance. Let it sink in. Go with it fer a sec and you might jus' dig it, dig? Even this white boy was beyond his first impression by the halfway point of the first track. This could almost be hip-hop for those who don't hop. Or hip. -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
