DIMITRI FROM PARIS & JOEY NEGRO - THE KINGS OF DISCO (BBE) |
| |

The social stigma on disco is over, so stop frontin' like you don't feel it. Disco is elemental and foundational to all popular dance music today and now it's high time to show respect and give up some love to our musical roots, which is just what DJs DIMITRI FROM PARIS and JOEY NEGRO (genuine fans of disco music) have done by creating THE KINGS OF DISCO, a compilation of obscure but classic cuts. Not at all cheesy or typical, THE KINGS OF DISCO features genuine, groovy, and sophisticated disco tracks that slipped under the pop radar way back when but have now resurfaced thanks to vinyl collectors extraordinaire, Dimitri and Joey. ‘Avid' is not sufficient to describe their obsessions, these guys are serious. Leaving crate-digging holes as deep as China, they've both scoured the world over for the rarest, highest quality records and finally "became friends as a way to not outbid each other eternally on internet auctions" notes Dimitri. These fierce DJ competitors combined their powers for good and each selected ten of their choicest, juiciest favorites to share with the rest of us. There is no bad song on this double CD album; every tune is an uptempo, fun, and neck-snapping anthem. Check out the very sexy "He'll Dance With Me" by Cappuccino El Bailara Conmigo, and the reggae-based "Black Skinned Blue Eyed Boys" by Derrick Harriott. "Pumping Iron" by Larry Wood and "Nuclear Night" by Crystal Disco Band, are crazy, glitzy, larger than life tracks with Vegas horns, furious bongos, cowbell, and some wah-wah; they're hot and sultry, like when Diana Ross got to the Emerald City in The Wiz. Master Boogie Song & Dance's "Roll the Joint", Mighty Fire's "Love Fantasy" and "Skate Dancer" by Vinzerelli all deliver serious groove and great breaks, especially Skate Dancer's funky walk up & down that bass - all over the place. Mary Clark's "Take Me I'm Yours" and "I'm In Love" by Cela are head-shakingly soulful and emotional with incredibly tight arrangements. The very best song out of KINGS OF DISCO's over 140 slamming minutes is "Not Tonight" by Macho. With its rock vocals and dirty guitar clashed against its brassy horn section and polished disco production, Not Tonight is super funky, sexy, loud, raunchy, and just dripping with sweat. Powerful vocals, beautiful harmonies and melodies, and back-bending bass lines, dance your was down to the record store for this album. Light the floors, practice your soul-clap, and all hail THE KINGS OF DISCO. bbemusic.com - rapsterrecords.com -- review by Ursula Williams
