LAURENT GARNIER - THE CLOUD MAKING MACHINE (MUTE)

The Cloud Making Machine bursts the bubble of hype surrounding the once revered French Techno master. Without having had the luxury of ever hearing Mr. Garnier spin live (or any of his previous works), I must say that I am incredibly disappointed with this release. Described as "mature" and "inventive" by the hype-making machines of the powers-that-be in the world of record company Hell, Mr. Garnier falls incredibly short in his bid to reclaim his throne left behind with 2000's critically-acclaimed Unreasonable Behaviour. Dark, scary, incredibly experimental, and beat-less almost throughout its entirety, The Cloud Making Machine is, for some, an incredible cinematic overture of mood and theory, but for me, it is just a weak testament to a much-heralded name such as his. With liner notes that begrudgingly warn "not to dance to", this is one CD that is sure to help burst the bubble of printed hype and fanfare that typically precedes a release such as this for some time to come. Dream-like and ultra-ethereal, T.C.M.M. is the soundtrack to an imaginary movie yet to be made, with song titles like "Barbiturk Blues", "Act 1 Minotaure Ex.", and "Controlling the House" adding a twisted "Psycho" dimension to his catalog of music. But other titles, such as "First Reaction", sparked one in me; to hit the "stop" button, while track number 8, "(I Wanna Be) Waiting for My Plane" left me asking questions to myself like "When's the next flight out of here?" I believe the world has enough moody downtempo nonsense to deal with, and doesn't need any more of it. Remember that old famous saying, "Caveat Emptor"? (definition; BUYER BEWARE) Somebody give me a beat! (Where's my Freedom Fries, dude??) -- review by Carl Noone, Jr.
