SALOME DE BAHIA – BRASIL (PENETRATION INC.)

From relaxed and amorous bossa nova to festive South American world excursions, this ethnic house set is a energetic but light and effortless batch of party tunes (especially if you’re looking to throw a salsa-themed party). One of the groovy things about the increasingly common marrying of house and world styles is that one often finds that genres ordinarily ignored become suddenly groovy and accessible. At any rate, while these dance tracks don’t summon my favorite world flavors, they still invite me in to enjoy a mental trip to a colorful fiesta south of the border. You can almost see Barry Manilow dancing (I really dug the Copa Cabana cover on this disc). It’s pretty cool, really. You can see frilly and bright dresses spinning out around exotic and sexy dancers while some Charro vocaled diva sings out some tunes in a South American language. Absolutely the only disadvantage I can find is that somehow the fusion here seems to have watered down both sides of the equation just a tad; in other words, the house feels a little standard and the world music feels a little like a discount world comp or something. However, I think that’s a little uberpicky on my part, too. I’ve recently gotten into authentic ethnic music (such as the Afropop of Fela Kuti and psychedelic rock of West Africa), so I’m probably unfairly comparing to the real exotic article. At any rate, the music on this disc is really good stuff and very much recommended for world fans. Fiesta! -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
