BEN SOWTON & ROLLERCONE – BARGROOVES: COSMOPOLITAN (SEAMLESS/ULTRA) |
| |

The Bargrooves series is repetitive. But when every installment in the series is so damn good, remaining consistent can hardly be construed as a fault. For those that don’t know, the Bargrooves series is DJ Ben Sowton’s baby, refined collections of the best deep house grooves that sound as good as they look – the CD cases are sharp, classy and arty. Sowton is always the goods on the first mix of the double-CD sets, and on Cosmopolitan he delivers again with a sexed-up mix of tunes by, amongst others, Fred Everything & Roy Davis Jr., Mettle Music and Andy Holder. The mix also features stuff from Seamless’s line of singles, including tracks by Ross Couch and Souldoubt. Not only is Sowton a solid DJ in his own right, he’s also giving a nod to DJs and producers on the second mix who might not otherwise get the attention they so rightly deserve. Disc two, for example, is mixed by Swiss/French DJ and producer Rollercone (a.k.a. Patrick Duvoisin), whose self-titled 2001 debut album is a stunning, must-own collection of the deepest house. Duvoisin’s own touches on Bargrooves show up on “The Journey,” a cheeky look at the indecisiveness London clubbing can cause, “The List” and a remix of Limbo Experience’s “Illusion.” The rest of the mix is filled out with tunes by Louie Vega, Ron Trent, Matty Heilbronn and Sumo. The one big difference with this Bargooves entry is the Seamless’s new partnership with American electronic giant Ultra Records, a fact which should further help these excellent house CDs find more good homes. seamlessrecordings.com, ultrarecords.com, rollercone.co.uk-- review by Yuri Wuensch
