RENAISSANCE PRESENTS NIC FANCIULLI (THRIVE) |
| |

With a little disco, a little funk, an ethereal mien
and an oblique hint of dub and hip-hop, this debut mix
CD by Nic Fanciulli is a fairly flavorful dish of
atmospheric house music. It's got a good groove that
sprouts some funky 'tude but without being
over-the-top with it; this is deep-into-the-night
flavored dancefloor music. But despite its ability to
get limbs movin' and da booty shakin', there's
definitely a chilled out thing going on here, too.
It's not so much in terms of the album's pacing,
which, as I said, is most definitely dance-oriented.
It's just that the ambience that surrounds the music
and from which the music itself almost seems to spring
has a certain laid back feeling to it. So dance or
kick back! As the music progresses into the second
disc, a buzzier nighttime energy definitely seems to
take hold and there's almost a feeling that Fanciulli
listened to some old school electronica and some funky
80s techno dance before he went to crafting his stuff.
For me, this second disc has a stronger personality,
but both sides sweet. -- review by Kristopher Upjohn
