MOSEZ - SO STILL (APACE MUSIC) |
| |

“Wrap your finger / around the world / and treat it like you / found the hidden pearl.” With the opening lyrics on this incredible album, the silky smooth sensual stylings of Mozez will pull you into his lyrical universe. To call this downtempo would be an injustice, as each of the fifteen tracks on this artist album are fully vocal songs, poems set to music, much like Mozez’s work with Zero 7. From “Feel Free” the aforementioned opening track, to “Baby Blue” elements of soul and electronic meld into atmospheric but structurally sound songs, at least for the majority. The liner notes boast some impressive credits, including Guy Sigsworth (producer for Madonna, Bjork, and Seal) on “Feel Free” and “Venus Rise” with its the bubbling oddness and sad trumpet; “Fuzz” written and produced by Nightmares On Wax and Zero 7 on “Beautiful Day” (though that one is surprisingly nothing special). The title track’s guitar is haunting and almost painfully beautiful as a backdrop to Mozez’s sweet high notes. Most artist albums have some filler tracks, and there's a slight faltering in midway in the collection on track number 7, and it finishes weakly from 11 (yep the Zero 7 one) to 14. How so? Well, for example, the looping drum driven “Getting Better” at number 7 somehow ends up a little too cheesy adult contemporary, and 11-14 just drag. But gems like number 8 “Take The Sun” and number 9 "Fuzz" kick in and all is forgiven. I can imagine the remixes burning off their energy already! Throughout the album, the incredibly high production quality means deep muffled basslines echo just as deeply on my laptop as they do in my car and headphones, and guitars and high hats are extra crisp. Oh yes, I’m fairly addicted to this album, and its coming everywhere with me, perfect for somber gray days and a sublime statement from a super talented artist.-- review by Claire Maxwell
