OSCAR G - MADE IN MIAMI (STAR 69) |
| |

Born and bred in Miami, Oscar G. has made a standout name for
himself as one of the main contributors to what’s called the “Miami sound” - it’s rich – it’s deep – it’s hotter than hot. Mixing genres such as house, tribal, disco, latin, and electro, Oscar G. makes the first half his latest release, Made In Miami, an emotive and sexy compilation with the last half going for the darker, deeper, harder vibe. Taking months to selectively choose the right tracks, the final picks were from well-known artists such as Basement Jaxx, Steve Lawler, Funky Green Dogs and Lee Coombs. Oscar G. then took the chosen few and enhanced them with edits, loops, and sampled vocals. All the way through Made In Miami there aren’t any cheesy, dated, or shock-value tracks. One of the most creative accomplishments is track nine on CD 1 - DJ Pezi’s “The New Dimension”. Oscar G. mashed it up with Basement Jaxx and Ralphie Rosario to create a layered energetic sound all its own.Says Oscar G. “There is a combination of brand new un-released tracks, tracks that have been big for me on the dance floor as well as a few classics. This is a true representation of how I put my sets together and what I like to hear.” These are tasteful, timeless dance tunes that Oscar G. has put into a layout that allows each track to enhance each other. CD 2 starts out darker with a simplistic electro soundscape. “Vibrate 2005” stays dark and gets chunky. “The Walk” builds again with its disco/electro energy. Then the dark deep energy grips even harder with “Sword Fight” by Lower East Side.“Move Your Body” starts into the climax with its hard pushing rhythm. But then suddenly I lost my sense of groove when the vibe turned heavy electro/techno with “Wanna Get Wet” since I’m not big on repetitive electro sounds (although I did enjoy the morphed male vocal.) At one point there was too much going on and I felt lost as to where the mix was going. Needless to say, I began getting back into the groove when “The Box” started making its way in with a more tribal feel. Again though, I suddenly felt thrown into an oddity with “The Horn”. Leaning towards experimental and electro with piercing synth and siren-style sounds, I felt a little lost in the cold. There were moments of the final track “Vanity” that moved me, but the colder electro segments within the production didn’t do as much for me as I would have liked and I found the ending track a little disappointing after such an exciting listen through most of mix. For me, CD 1 is killer with its overall happy tribal/house and CD 2 comes in as second favorite with the majority of deep dark tracks synonymous with peak dance time.Made In Miami is cohesive, full of energy, and spans the emotional spectrum while also giving a taste of various dance music genres. Oscar G., besides being at the forefront of the “Miami Sound”, also partners with Ralph Falcon to comprise the award-winning production/remix team Murk.
