DJ DB - BREAKBEAT SCIENCE: EXERCISE 4 (BREAKBEAT SCIENCE) |
| |

After DJ Dara did the first Breakbeat Science Exercise
CD, one would have assumed DJ DB would have done the
immediate follow up. He did, after all, co-found the
influential BBS drum and bass shop with partners Dara
and Paul Morris. Regardless, it was worth the wait
and like the other Exercise mixes before it, this
is one dope set of tunes. However, unlike Klute’s
bottom-heavy entry just prior to this one (a CD I
reviewed in the past [click
here] for Raves.com), DB’s mix is the most musical
selection of drum and bass stitched together in recent
memory. It’s also stacked with DB’s own productions,
along with fare from Dara, Pieter K and more. Without
disparaging jungle’s roots, this is the kind of drum
and bass mix a trance or progressive house fan could
easily latch onto – there’s that much melody going
on. DB’s mixing is also truly phenomenal. It’s tight
without being too manicured; you can really hear the
mixes happening, with the percussion and bass lines
taking over from one another neatly – there are some
beautiful transitions for a correspondingly great
selection of diverse tunes. The favorite would likely
be DB & Stakka’s eerie twang on “Spaghetti,” which
at a guess is an homage to the compositions of Ennio
Morricone for Sergio Leone’s spaghetti westerns of
the 1960s. Go look that shit up, kids; Morricone is
must listening material and indicative of DB’s wide
range of influences.www.breakbeatsciencerecordings.com
