INDICIA - IDENTIFYING MARKS (KANPAI)

For me, Indicia's remarkably strong trip-hop textures are mitigated somewhat by the insistence on focusing on the admittedly beautiful vocals. OK, I have no problem in principle with vox in my electronica though I generally prefer it not to have such; sometimes it blends well, sometimes it detracts from the aspects I really want to hear. In this case, the acidy melodies and textures are buried under the singing and I think the most compelling part of the compositions were relegated to a secondary status. It isn't as though this sucks. This is quite well done - if you're looking for vocal techno. I would much rather have submerged in the deftly crafted textures of the non-vocal element but their trippiness was thinned by the singing. Like I said, if you want vocal techno, I can highly recommend this. But my own personal tastes shall seek elsewhere. -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
