EDWARD KA-SPEL - LAUGH CHINA DOLL (BETA-LACTAM RING RECORDS)

Never let it be said Ka-Spel doesn't do normal songs sometimes. OK, normal is way, way, way the wrong word. What I mean is that he sometimes approaches traditional songwriting. Er, by which I mean he transmogriphies traditional song structures the Ka-Spel way. Which is no shock for those who are familiar with other Ka-Spel work and work he did with the Legendary Pink Dots. But if you've heard some of his stuff, you might be surprised he even gets this close to accessible, which is to say, if you have any friends that are at least willing to hear anything once, you might get them to hear this. Ka-Spel is admittedly more for fans of off the wall stuff, and so, naturally, I come along and say, "Hey, this is pretty good stuff." Really, you can imagine the sort of electronic side of 80s new wave music (this is, in fact, a rerelease of an 84 album) shot through with Edward Ka-Spel's morphine pop stylings and drugged vocal tone. The weird thing is that he doesn't sound bored or uninterested, just waaaaay out there. Just like the rest of the musical aspects on display here.-- review by Kristofer Upjohn
