AUTOMATO - AUTOMATO (COUP DE GRACE) |
| |

Automato is an interesting amalgamation of influences ranging from 70s funk
and hip-hop to indie rock. After a chance encounter with the dance-punk
pioneering production team of James Murphy and Tim Goldsworthy, better known
as The DFA, the groundwork was set for one of the coolest and hip albums in
a long time. The flash and bling is not needed as the albums depends more
on Automato‚s ability to create tracks that flow as smooth as silk over
beats that are based in solid funky groove. On the self-titled release,
Automato further takes it beyond the traditional hip-hop album by using a
variety of instrumentation, including antique Moogs and drums, bass, guitars
and keyboards to create their genre-defying mix of ultra cool beats. From
the flow of the lyrics through the varied mix of funk and hip-hop, Automato
has blended an album that has a fresh, hip bohemian quality and should
inspire others to follow.-- review by Shawn Wallace
