CLUB AZULI - MIXED BY DAVID PICCIONI (AZULI)

From retro-rave flaves and disco doings (Full Intention's "I Believe in You" and Rasmus Faber's "Get Over Here") to some new-wavishy tingings (Jacques Lu Cont's remix of Depeche Mode's "A Pain That I'm Used To"), from trance touched trippyness (Lindstrom's "I Feel Space") to infectios R&B, funktified get-up-and-moveness, the smoothly mixed, tasty-textured beats and such that drive "Club Azuli" kick it up to the right notch. The Azuli name has garnered praise for its string of dance albums and this one will just add to the props, no doubt. The album represents the start of a brand spankin' new project (for which the CD is titled); just think - new doings from an old hat - this label has been doing the house thing for ages, a veritable grandaddy in the fast-moving and quickly changing dance scene. But old fogy Azuli's not and this disc proves it as it keeps things on the shakeup. The music manages to pump and pulse and keep up a steady beat without tumbling into repetition and each of the songs manages to find its own taste to distinguish it from the previous. Some house is drab but this ain't that house. While this doesn't quite reach the levels of trance (at least for me), it's still classy house sounds and those whose bodies move best to a slab of house tracks will likely give some repeat play to this one. (Purchasers of the album will get a Club Azuli Card, each with its own number and bringing with it perks such as discounts on upcoming releases, price cuts on clubbing fun and more. -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
