ABOVE & BEYOND - ANJUNABEATS VOL. 3 (ANJUNABEATS/ULTRA RECORDS)

Pete Tong has described Above & Beyond as “the UK's trance superstars" and after hearing their latest release, “Anjunabeats Volume 3”, it’s a no-brainer as to how Tong came up with the title. Along with having won Radio 1's Essential Mix of the Year Award, Above & Beyond has clearly proven their staying power. The men behind the Anjunabeats label, Jono Grant, Tony McGuinness, and Paavo Siljamäki are also the men behind Above & Beyond. The group’s ability to select and produce killer tracks with top-notch production and emotional depth is in the class of other masters of selection and production such as Paul vanDyk. “Anjunabeats Volume 3” is progressive trance at its best. “Air for Life” [which came together with rising star Andy Moor and snippets of vocals from the phenomenal Carrie Skipper], “Sirens of the Sea” by OceanLab [which is Above & Beyond featuring the sensuous female vocals of Justine Suissa], “Time Goes By” [featuring Carrie Skipper once again], and “Resolution” by Aalto helped to make this release quickly become one of my all-time favorites. The mix is cohesive, with full awareness of musicality. The buildups of musical tension, with the oh-so-right dropdowns, make this mix dynamic and emotive. To close things out, “Made of Sun” is an intelligent breakbeat finale that is one of the exclusives to this mix that is one of the many on this release not to be missed. www.anjunabeats.com www.ultrarecords.com-- review by Jules Mari
