BASS LO-RYDERS - NYTE RYDERS (NEURODISC)

"Nyte Ryders" is another best-of comp of fan-picked tracks, this time (tyme?) representing the work of the Bass Lo-Ryders. The comp gets off to a good start with the moodytasty reggae grooves of "Come Wit It Mon" before moving on to the acidy techno textures and quick-witted and catchy beats of "10 PM," a pretty killer track. Dub flavahs and totally hooky rhythms move in on "Take a Low Ride," another bit of grooviliousness, then gives way to the chilled funk of "Summer Beats." Catch the buzz and ride the melodic prettycisms of "Aphrodisiac" (taking a cue from the title and imagining this one is mmmmmmm ...). "All Your Bass Are Belong to Us" carries us via a progressive little intro into some chilled but energetic breakbeats while "Boomin' Da Bass Bins" is a trip to Hip-Hopsville. "The Beat Kicks and I Start Rockin'" is a slice of high energy, acidic techno with lotsa punch. Or you can groove to the drum and bass antics of "Speakerblower." "Boom Attack" puts us back in the vicinity of reggae influences and "Interface" is a pretty slice of electronica. "Our God In A Way Is Bass" is an atmospheric and progressive siren call of effective but not pushy beats and ethereal melodies. "Funky Breaks" hints at oblique exotica infusing hip-hop/techno considerations. "The Perfect Beat" goes back to big, acidy techno and "Caught in a Bass Trap" is kind of a funky little number with quite the personality and a dollop of houseyness. "Nyte Ryders" is a pretty solid slab of basswork from folks who know how to make tracks that are listenable and effective, excess bass or not. -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
