CHACHI JONES - DYMAXION DAYDREAM (LUNATIC WORKS) |
| |

Chachi Jones music is a bit difficult to categorize
(though I will say that no matter what it does Jones'
stylings always circle back around to glitch at some
point). Which, in this case, is a good thing. It's the
sign of an intelligent DJ thinking outside the box as
he crafts his tunage. Of course, Lunatic Works is
known for introducing unusual artists to the world and
their track record is pretty strong for those artists
being both unusual and good. Jones is no exception.
Soothing quiet melodies that, on their own, would make
for alluring near-ambient serve as a drifting backdrop
to the manic beats and occasional samples Jones' uses
in his compositions. There are a few glitchy lower
hits but tons of upper end percussiveness, as though
someone snared the high end of some drum and bass and
left the bass behind, then tossed it in a dryer to
spangle up the rhythms. There's lots of skippyness (as
though someone were doing scratches with the music in
spots) and the beats spaz all over like some frantic
breakbeat trying to escape from a cage. Now, these
aren't complaints; these are compliments. For no
matter how jittery it may seem overall, make no
mistake: These tunes are deliberately constructed and
are from the mind of a sharp, creative talent in the
world of electronica.-- review by Kristofer Upjohn
