DIGWEED - TRANSITIONS (THRIVE) |
| |

Fuzzy warbling bass lines, bleeps and samples. Digweed has gotten, dare I say, funky? Yep, the king of the typical trance compilation has found a new groove on Transitions, a new series inspired by his globally syndicated radio show of the same name. They should stick a disclaimer label on the front "Not Just Another Trance Compilation!" Digweed's not left his fans behind, this is still recognizable and digestible by lovers of his flawless mixing and innovative use of instrumental sounds. For example, Popnonnome "On The Run" with its lively kick drum, ear throbbing bass, and catchy upbeat synths. "Torch" is a bit more typical with its ethereal breakdowns, but there is a minimalist punch to its layers of noises that to these well-worn trancehead ears, sounds super fresh. That fresh sound runs steady through the entire CD, and honestly its hard not to just start a big long list here of the tracks I really liked, but "Crusin" and Digweed's own brand new track "Warung Beach" warrant special mention. My only complaint is sometimes the intensity edges up above where I'm comfortable (notably "Flake Escape" and "Roots 4 Acid") but if you are a fan of non-vocal high energy acid house, then you should definitely check out this CD.-- review by Claire Maxwell
