HEARTBEAT MIXED BY JULIUS PAPP (LOVESLAP!)

Spartan but not thin, jazzy and with a dollop of chillout flavor, though propelled by danceable beats, this groovy track for a relaxed night of dancing in smoky rooms, "UC Anthem" by Marlon D., is the kick-off for the Julius Papp-mixed Heartbeat release from Loveslap! recordings. Soft sax and fluttering woodwinds flow throughout the track, which segues with not the slightest hitch in mood into "Everlasting Love - JC Distant Music Mix" by Passionardor, a disco-y velvet vocal track. The mood is set, the promise presented, and the ensuing batch of house tracks are all gently sultry with danceable but not aggressive beats. On one hand, I like the chilled atmosphere generated by the music, but there the flavor of music it retrotouches isn't my favorite brand of tunes. Also, it lacks the edge and textured taste I prefer if I'm going to listen to house. These are, however, admittedly personal gripes and bear no resemblance to criticism of Papp's skill, either as a mixer or as a chooser of tracks. With "Episode 4" by Quentin Harris adding a wee electric tinge to spice up the overall relatively organic feel of the disc, or "Most Precious Love - DF's 3000 Vocal Mix" by Blaze ft Barbara Taylor borrowing a little trance energy melded to the proceedings' old schoolness to help peak out the house session, Papp's song choices are not in question. Nor is his able mixing and maintaining of a consistent flavor while embracing subtle flavah differences to keep this from being uberrepetitive house bumpbump. If you groove on the trend of reaching back to the flavors of the dance styles of the 70s and fusing it with today's electronic beats, and if you dig house, then Papp is a worthy purchase. -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
