Wink is wicked. Wicked talented, wicked cute, and wicked good on this double mix CD. I've been grooving to Josh Wink's techno (and I think he plays and makes techno in its purest form) so seeing his face on the cover of the third installment of his Profound Sounds series was like seeing an old friend. Tossing it in the stereo, the feeling is much the same - you know this music, these sounds, this style, but its been a while and he's changed, gotten a new haircut maybe, or gotten better sounding with age. The first disc is called "Subconscious" and it must hit me hard in my frontal lobe, especially with the dopamine rush I get from Wink's remix of Radiohead and the closing with his classic "Higher State of Consciousness" though the odd Indian-influenced addition I could have done without. Disc 2 once again mixes past and present, electronic and jazz from Jeff Mills to the Orb and Wink's own "Swirl" neatly bringing this thought pattern to a memorable peak. If you somehow aren't familiar with Wink's style of music, and the names David Alvarado, Pete Moss, or Rulers of The Deep don't ring a bell, realize this is not music for the faint of heart or bass line. Grandma will say "turn down that noise" and your psychologist will ask what do you see in the forms this music creates in your mind. As each sound is explored to its fullest potential, you might answer: endless possibilities and undulating dance floors. That's what I heard.-- review by Claire Maxwell
