ARMIN VAN BUUREN - A STATE OF TRANCE 2006 (ULTRA) |
| |

Armin Van Buuren returns with his signature sound with
the compilation series for which he has become known:
A State of Trance. And what a lovely state it is. You
might like to visit and you might even like to stay.
Van Buuren again works with a subtler variety of hook,
eschewing the more blatant styles of pop and epic
trance (though epic auras frequent the music on this
CD) and choosing instead to lull the listener in like
patient sirens, or, if you will, like an angler,
content to feed you line and slowly reel you in until
you're hooked. The muscle and pulse of the music Van
Buuren compiles lurks under the surface, working its
magic like sinews moving underneath the skin. Van
Buuren doesn't feel compelled to punch you out with
his muscle but rather to get you in the grip of a firm
handshake. Rather than tossing out flashy hooks, he
captures with intelligent and unassuming but quite
potent melodicism that is subtle and long and lean
like a saturated blue sky. It's a tribute to Van
Buuren that, whether composing (there are a couple of
his own tracks on here) or choosing from other DJs
canon's, he is able to concoct a seamless flow with a
progressive build. His DJ mixes are works as a whole
when he's done with them, instead of a series of
individuals strung together. That is the art of the
master-mixing DJ. -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
