JOHN DIGWEED - FABRIC 20 (FABRIC) |
| |

This CD is a five hour Fabric set, condensed into 74 minutes, and I hope it surprises a few people" says John Digweed. Well I am definitely one of those people. During my first listen, I was continually intrigued and saying to myself "what the...?". But from the second listen on, I found it hard to stop playing it because I was drawn into the music. Digweed has selectively chosen fourteen keenly produced tracks and completed an ingenious musical puzzle. Fabric 20 expands the musical boundaries of mix compilations. The fusion of Progressive with Electro, Dub, and Techno takes Progressive beyond the usual listening experience. Pete Moss' "Strive to Live", with its precise vocal edits and its deep yet floating groove, starts things off. Then the deep and hypnotic "Traber" by Adam Johnson takes over. Repair's "Forgive + Forget" is busy yet well thought out with great sound design and is smoothly progressive. DJ Rasoul's "True Science" with its jazzy sax line, very syncopated rhythm, and varied sounds switches things up. It's not the usual funky house track. Moving into The Glass' "Won't Bother Me", the bassline and funky guitar are reminiscent of an old disco tune. "In the Dark" by Billy Dalessandro takes it deep, chunky, phatt and funky. The vibe continues to subtly increase in energy as you make your way through the tracks - and the final two are killer and make a sweet ending. Track thirteen is Joel Mull's "Emico". It's cinematic, modern, chunky, phatt, deep and dark with some delicious moments. The ending then comes too soon with Matrix and Danny J's "Vertigo" whose energy could shine light into any darkness. "Vertigo" is a perfect example of a 'feel-good' dance track with its endorphin-producing musical landscape and Digweed has perfectly placed the track. Fabric 20 is 39th in a series made to capture what is played at the London club Fabric - and its 39th release is phenomenal. www.fabriclondon.com - www.johndigweed.com -- review by Jules Mari
