NAKED RHYTHM - FREQUENCY (CARAVAN RECORDS) |
| |

Naked Rhythm has caught the wave of increasing popularity for world music filtered through mainstream electronica to create exotic but accessible music with cool grooves and a bit of mystique. Overall, NR's mix of styles works fairly well, though it does lack the robustness of more organic, traditional world music. But that's not what they're really going for and the album is an overall success. Generous use of ethnic instruments and sometimes exotic vocal stylings bring that foreign fascination to the compositions on "Frequency." These elements are blended well with the electronic grooves, which overall dwell in house-style territory. Less frequently (if you'll allow the pun), hip-hop and funk are employed for an additional interesting blend, bringing classic world sounds into contact with urban ethnic artistry. A standout track to sample would be "Sari Sky," laden with semi-chilled beats and plenty of exotica, creating a lush, groovy experience.-- review by Kristofer Upjohn
