DENNY TSETTOS - CLUB ESSENTIALS (GOSSIP) |
| |

"Club Essentials" is a flawed but effective mix of house music that adds a bit of oomph to the genre. There are two discs here and each one approaches house from a different direction. The first disc is very minimal, as though taking the semi-spartan approach of standard house music and amplifying it. What you get is a mixed result. On the one hand, the music is atmospheric, but at the same time it tends to fade into the background of your attention. It's almost a disc to reserve strictly for dancing when you need beats. But it kind of redeems itself by its approach to minimalist dance. The first CD has a remarkable about of electro flavor to it and electro has always been a genre quite suited to a minimalist approach (though it's not limited to that), since it's a style that can be acid textured and minimal, making for sublime listening in the right hands. The electro/house fusion doesn't meet its potential here, but it's sort of interesting to hear. The second disc is where "Club Essentials" finds itself. There's more going on, it's high energy, it's funked out and kinda hot, really, reaching a peak with Rocker's Revenge "Walking on Sunshine (Live Element Mix)". I wouldn't come near universally recommending this, but house fans should delight in it. -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
