Louie Austen's "Iguana" reminds me of nothing so much as a variation on the electronic rock new wave bands of the 80s, though there's more than that going on here. There's a ton of crooner stylings to be found in the course of this CD and the sort of strange fusion resulting of these two styles (and other referenced genres) makes for music that has the hint of a wry smirk on its face. Austen's having fun but he's turning out terrific music in the process, as well. The semi-minimalist approach (chilled pacing, pseudo-spartan textures and a sort of just-me-and-the-electronica simplicity) contributes greatly to the artistic success of the album. Here's to hoping every other aspect of success falls on this album. It's surprisingly engaging for a disc that's so laid back, overall. Austen knows how to rope the listener in, entertain him and get him into the spirit of things. -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
