BAD BOY BILL - BEHIND THE DECKS LIVE (THRIVE)

There is absolutely a solid reason why Bad Boy Bill was voted “America’s Favorite House DJ” by BPM magazine’s reader poll... again, I might add. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, then grab yourself a copy of his latest CD +DVD release and you’ll have all the reasons your ears and eyes could need. The auditory evidence: the live mix on the CD, with 20 tracks listed, though it doesn’t play like some of his past releases jumping seemingly seconds after one track starts to the next, but there’s layering going on here, and I’d guesstimate he sometimes stretches it out to 3 or 4 minutes before mixing or scratching (actually, very little scratching, and he’s a champ) in another element. There’s lots of bouncy vocal- and beat-driven fun to keep your living room dancefloor moving, or you car jumping, or your feet pumping on the treadmill or wher ever you are listening to this CD! The best place would be anywhere with a 5.1 sound system, to get the full effects of the “live” crowd which surrounds you. Some of the tracks to note are BBB’s own “Just Like I Want,” a Green Velvet Remix of Cajmere feat. Dajae “Say U Will” and near the end the unforgettable “Teasing Mr. Charlie.” Now nothing is particular groundbreaking or awe inspiring, but solid through and through, plus the CD comes packaged with a DVD, and its still under $15 on Amazon, kudos to you BBB’s label for packing in the added value in a really nicely designed foldout packaging too. Oh the DVD is a lot better than most, it runs 120 minutes (this is where the 5.1 mix can be found) along with some actually really decent concert footage, then the usual “behind the scenes” and “interviews” which do give you a realistic taste, and I’m sure the rabid BBB fans will be eating this up with a spoon. Even if you’re a BBB newbie, you’ll find this CD+DVD have a great energy that you just can’t resist.-- review by Claire Maxwell
