DAVE SEAMAN FEAT. LEXICON AVENUE - THERAPY SESSIONS VOL 3 (THRIVE) |
| |

Now you know when you are getting volume 3 of anything, the first two had to have been pretty good... and with the Therapy Sessions, both prior TS releases’s ended up in the Top 20 compilations of the year in DJ magazine. Checking out the back of the CD also raised my hope pretty high: the double CD set features tracks & remixes by Plastikman, Satoshi Tomiie, Cagedbaby, Freeform Five, Dylan Rhymes, Ame, Radioslave and Linus Loves. So try as I might not to have high expectations, clearing my mind to give this double disc set an un-biased listen, I couldn’t help but compare. Not just that Dave Seaman had changed his course and invited a fellow UK artist to mix the 2nd CD (Newcastle’s legendary Lexicon Avenue) instead of another Aussie as he’d done for the prior releases. But the prior two releases had been spot-on in their choice of music, not overtly trendy but with some timely gems as well as a timeless flow and energy. In Volume 3, Seaman does manage to capture that same timeless quality, especially in the beginning of his mix. The satisfying tech of Habersham, Kupon, and Stelios are undeniable. But damn if he doesn’t kowtow to the electro “in” sound smack in the middle of his mix with a remix of Anada. I’m just so over electro I can’t get my ears past it!! Maybe others won’t be so bothered by the electro blips (there are a few more but for some reason that first one really stands out as the transition) on a really excellent mix of mostly prog house and breakbeat. Now on to the 2nd CD, which starts out with the stellar Spirit Catcher remix of Satoshi Tomiie’s “Glow.” Lovely. Deep tribal prog house that the Lexicon trio are famous for, and speaking of famous they drop some big tunes like Ame’s “Raj” and the oldie but goodie “Spastik” from Plastikman, oh and I cannot leave out their incredible own tune, “That Acid Track.” Delicious! Label boss Dave may have lost me a little bit by adding electro to his mix, but he totally makes up for it in his choice of Lexicon Avenue to mix the 2nd. -- review by Claire Maxwell
