EVIL NINE - YOU CAN BE SPECIAL TOO (MARINE PARADE) |
| |

Evil Nine's debut artist album is hip hop on the fringe. You Can Be Special Too is Music for Moshing. Beastie Boys fans will most likely take a liking to the creations of artists Tom Beaufoy and Pat Pardy, the two behind the Evil Nine who initially came together in 1998. Featuring artists such as Aesop Rock and Juice Aleem, their talents are layered over breaks 'n beats. It's music that can get the funk going. The first track "Crooked" (featuring Aesop) is the first release from the album and it screams to be a soundtrack for Spring Break. Considered to be Pete Tong's Heroes of 2004, Evil Nine is undeniably a party-influenced duo. Mixing it up with house, rock and techno, their sound doesn't quite fit into any particular genre. Although "Crooked" was the first release from the album, personally, my choice as a first album release would have been "We Have the Energy". Its phatt hard beat, tribal congas, and flighty synths have a Crystal Method-ish vibe with lyrics chanting "we have the energy, let's get together and wreck shit". And we all know, at times, there are times we'd all like to "wreck shit" - and "We Have the Energy" would suit the mood perfectly. Adam Freeland's Marine Parade label signed these guys on and are they seem to be looking to make a statement. Hopefully with Freeland's label behind them, their voice can be heard. www.marineparade.net -- review by Jules Mari
