DJ DAN - LIFT 2 (THRIVE) |
| |

DJ Dan's "Lift 2" is not the supersmash you'd expect given the hype surrounding this DJ but it still comes across as energetically sexy. It's sort of a come-on in the form of dance music. I've heard sex described as horizontal dancing and, of course, you'd be foolish to ignore the connections between sexy and dance. What DJ Dan's "Lift 2" does is highlight and bring to a keen point the merging point. This 2-disc mix is sultry and sensual and has plenty of energy, executed with fairly lush textures. It isn't as compelling as one would hope for with a DJ of this reputation but it's still clear that Dan knows how to create music in the house vein. He manipulates texture and pulse to feed the vacuum not filled by melody (which isn't absent, but this is sort of stripped lean with the spaces rounded out by muscular texture and a healthy heartbeat). This is music that is minimalist on one end but very full-bodied on the other, which is the intent, of course. -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
