Though this CD did start out inspiring an ambivalent reaction in me - I at first felt it was somehow both infectious and irritatingly repetitive - in the end, the textures and electrohouse inspired melodies prevailed. Infectious won out and I have to admit this disc kind of makes me want to get drunk and dance my butt off in some night club where I could just let it all hang out without self-consciousness. And surrounded by ladies. Definitely. Texture is a heavy factor in "Land of the Monkey Snake" and given its very electro flavors, it's no wonder. There are passages of classic electro minimalism here (though it pretty much avoids the uberdark Teutonic grimness of some German electro) but Lee Coombs also layers in some melodies for climactic segments. Coombs has a way of building up, then back down again, actually managing to keep things mixed up as this electrohouse batch of tunes runs its course. Some moments are brighter, some darker, but for a group of tracks rooted in genres known for frequent forays into repetition and/or minimalism, the DJ pulls off a respectable amount of eclecticism. -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
