BALANCE 010 MIXED BY JIMMY VAN M (EQ) |
| |

"Balance" is one of the most outstanding releases you're apt to encounter this year. Jimmy Van M knows what to compile and how to mix it together. Be it the downtempo, midtempo or uptempo disc in this 3-CD set, Van M's talent is readily apparent. He unfailingly selects tracks that are emotive, full of depth, beautifully textured and possessing fine melodies. All three discs are spacious yet tight and infectious as hell, sucking the listener in with very little build-up time needed. It would be very difficult to decide which disc is the best as each represents its chosen pace perfectly. The downtempo and midtempo discs both present collections of gorgeous and mesmerizing tracks for those slower moments in life while the uptempo disc captures the same beauty with an extra boost of energy. Contributions to this comp include: Downtempo — Bill Laswell ("Ethiopia" and "Babylon Ghost"), Future Sound of London ("Study of Six Guitars"), Depeche Mode ("Halo (Goldfrapp remix)"); Midtempo — Cocteau Twins ("Blue Bell Knoll"), Aphex Twin ("Delphium"), Saint Etienne ("Cool Kids of Death (Underworld remix)"); and Uptempo — Djuma Soundsystem (two different mixes of "Les Djinns"), Sam Lebowski ("The Reducer 2"), Acid Test ("Test One"). And these are just a few examples of the treats to be found. Also, I am by no means listing these as the bar-setters of "Balance." These simply serve as a sampling of the many, many fine tracks available here. The songs all flow nicely from one to the next and the atmosphere created in this collection spreads perfectly across all three discs. Van M does well keeping solidarity among the discs while letting each have its own special feel. This is a solid set of tracks and highly recommended. -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
