THUNDERBALL - CINESCOPE (ESL)

Thunderball's "Cinescope" ends up being a tasty if a bit pedestrian mix of groovy beats and funky influences. Tinges of world and lots of disco-worthy retro flavors fuse with light but energetic percussion on "Cinescope" to create music that has some of the personality of elevator music (if elevator music were considered cool). It's highly listenable and definitely sets a nice mood even if it never really feels spectacular. The music has a bit of the I'm-hip attitude but carries it off without floundering. There's a bit of Euroflavor and some hints of bossa nova in the mix, as well. Overall, what you have is a collection of perky yet laid back midtempo tunes that look back as well as around the world to create music that somehow looks to the horizon. -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
