MARTIN PETER - ENOUGH OF THIS (ANGORA STEEL) |
| |

With the electro-punk intro to Enough of This?!, you
can pretty much figure Martin Peter is going to take
you on one hell of an odd ride. Just when Beyond
Possession, the disc opener, has screamed you into
submission, a weird fusion of electro-new-wave (a la
NWs punkier side) comes roving in with its maniacally
inspired beats in Psychoville. When the disc shifts
into the third track, Edingburgh, one realizes the
new wave influence is here to stay as the listener
faces an instrumental hybrid of modern electronic
break beats and Cure-ish new wave sensibilities. A
darker, stranger turn arises on Day in the Cafe with
its infectious mid-tempo hooks, grim
semi-industrialized vox taking turns with fuzzed
electro vocals and crisp rock guitarwork filtered
through an electronic mindset. Theres lots of oddness
to be found herein. Bypass references Teutonic
techno while Cherrybox seems to be drawing its
guitar line from the flourishing and oxymoronic big
label indie rock scene and pushing said styling into
an instrumental electrigroove. Superstar seems to
have similar music in mind in its guitar line while
also referring to the punkwave flavors that inform
this album as a whole, along with some Brit rock
taste. Kill Gucci Punks boasts a startling nod to
electronic rock 80s style embraced by dark modern
techno textures. Of course, Martin Peters obvious
wicked humor juices the entire disc, both musically
and on the titular front as well. An experimental but
accessible darkgroove offering. -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
