GILLES PETERSON & PATRICK FORGE PRESENT - SUNDAY AFTERNOON AT DINGWALLS (ETHER)

The title of this mix from Peterson and Forge is a tribute to the club Dingwalls in the U.K. Twenty years ago, the club kicked off its "Talkin' Loud" Sunday Sessions that heaped up jazz offerings for dancers and drinkers alike. Forge and Peterson, who spun records for listeners when the live act for the day wasn't performing, here present a fat platter of groovy tracks that cover a broad spectrum of jazz flavors. The disc commences with fluffier tunes that incorporate elements of smooth jazz, bossa nova, world music, funk (which pops up here and there all across this release, such as on disc two's "Sweetie Pie" from Stone Aliance) and such. It's the lighter side of what's on tap here. As things progress, some darker, more "serious" jazz offerings begin to appear, such as the standouts on disc one, "Kitty Bey" by Byron Morris and Michel Legrand's "Southern Routes". The second disc is the more potent of the two, boasting some jazz jams that really get the smoky club flavors flowing. It kicks off with the excellent "Cool Out" by Leroy Hutson and also features great tracks like Willis Jackson's "Nuther'n Like Thuther'n". There's also the surprise of finding hip-hop fused with jazz - just note "Luck of Lucien" by Tribe Called Quest. This is totally an eclectic mix that has something for everyone - smooth sounds, world infusions, funk, hip-hop, disco (Norman Connors' "Captain Connors") and more. "Dingwalls" is a fine, groovy slab of jazz manifested in various flavorful forms; it's highly listenable and excellent for partying or solo listening.-- review by Kristofer Upjohn
