SHARAM - DUBAI (GLOBAL UNDERGROUND)

Deep Dish's Sharam here steps out with a solo mix that takes house rooted music and weaves in elements of subtle, semi-ethereal trance. The effect is to bring a bit of trance's lushness to house grooves, a nice twist. "Dubai" is an effective if unexceptional 2-disc collection of dance tracks and I can say that Sharam brings the house genre up a notch - the infusion of trance elements here and there and tinges of other electronica influences helps make up for some of house's inherent deficits. The music is a little more melodic and boasts a decent sense of richness. It is still a conflicted release, though. "Dubai" is a little repetitive and low-key. However, it avoides descending into tedium. Sharam mixes things up a little bit, bringing a modicum of eclecticism to the mix. The individual tracks here manage to have more sense of idividual identity than some humdrum run-together mixes I've heard in my days, though there is the tiniest bit of homogeny to the proceedings. I will say that house devotees will probably be pretty enthusiastic about this, even if I'm not. It's a better-than-average dance mix even if it doesn't hit one out of the park.-- review by Kristofer Upjohn
