JUSTIN MARTIN & JOHNNY FIASCO - OM WINTER SESSIONS (OM)

"Om: Winter Sessions" is not an exciting release, however, it isn't without its merits. Justin Martin and Johnny Fiasco each offer a disc's worth of house tracks on this 2-CD set. The saving grace is the low-key approach taken by both DJs on "Winter Sessions". It makes for a pseudo-minimalism that conjures some decent atmosphere. This is - appropriately, given the moniker - a fairly chilled disc. Not chillout, mind you, so don't get confused. This is dance music, but there's a cool breeze to it, which I guess says something for the DJs' abilities to conform to a theme. These house grooves are informed by jazz, electro, retro electric pop, ambient and more. It's rather a quiet listen for dance floor music and would be better suited to laying out some backburner grooves for a small cocktail party or just hanging round the house when you want non-aggressive music that's not all-the-way chillout. Of course, these could be serviceable dance floor energy providers if you turned the volume up, too. Not bad. -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
