JOAKIM - MONSTERS & SILLY SONGS (!K7)

Joakim's music is rooted in new wave and synthpop flavors with glitchy dashes of experimentation on "Monsters & Silly Songs." While there are plenty of traditional flavors mixed in here, it's wrapped up in a heady dose of quirk. The blend opens up Joakim's music to a potential audience of both trad synth/new wavers and aficianados of experimental-minded music. It's creative and distinctive, though in the end it weighs in a little light on hook and doesn't really beckon for a second listen. Of those potential audience members, I suspect a few more will pop up amongst the fans of weird as new wavers may be slightly put off by the curious tweaks that are part and parcel of Joakim's sound.-- review by Kristofer Upjohn
