TIME OUT PRESENTS THE OTHER SIDE: BERLIN WITH ELLEN ALLIEN (DEAF, DUMB + BLIND) |
| |

"The Other Side: Berlin" is not the sort of compilation your'e apt to hear everyday. Even on a conceptual level, this series distinguishes itself in a crowded music scene. Each disc in the "The Other Side" series offers up the flip side of cultural tourism. Eschewing all the obvious angles of visiting another city with a different culture, "The Other Side" series shows you the sights (or sounds) you won't find highlighted in your tour book. Presenting music representative of the non-mainstream culture and offering in the CD booklet a list of interesting places to visit, "The Other Side" offers listeners a vacation from home. The Berlin entry hands out an eclectic collection of songs that are united by means of their determined differentness. (For example, David Bowie's German version of "Heroes" is included here - it's called "Helden.") Quirk abounds, and while the songs vary in genre style, they have in common their outside-the-boxness. This is a comp whose overall flavor seems perfectly suited to a CD devoted to Berlin. -- review by Kristofer Upjohn

Since Kris is reviewing the CD portion of this release, I get to cover the DVD! The DVD disc contains lots of content, like 48 minute documentary following Ellen around Berlin going shopping for clothes, records, and talking to other electronic artists like Richie Hawtin. If you've never been to Berlin (that would include me) now you can feel like you have... and it really makes me want to go! There are other portions of video covering where to eat, stay, clubs, etc too, which makes sense given that this release is put out by Time Out the amazing tour guide book series. In total there is 2 hours and 20 minutes of video, all with an incredible soundtrack by Ellen. For the price of a regular mix CD that you are getting this DVD too is just incredible!-- review by Claire Maxwell
