GREAT LAKES SWIMMERS - ONGIARA (NETTWERK) |
| |

Quietly captivating, Great Lake Swimmers' lush fusion of indie pop, adult contemporary and folk roots is smart, original and captivating and manages to be intelligent and unique while still possessing mainstream accessibility. Hints of James Blount and Five Kids Fighting mingle with the folk pop flavors for a sound you could soak in for ages. Instrumentation is eclectic, featuring everything from guitar to wurlitzer organ to glockenspiel to banjo, making for a rich, inviting sound. The songwriting is imbued with a dash of cheer and hope as well as an abiding sense of melancholy, but without being depressive or nihilist. "Ongiara" is an impressive disc with a distinct flavor, traditional flavors mingling freely with current pop tastes but never sacrificing artistic integrity in favor of mainstream kowtowing. Great Lake Swimmers are among the greats and the group demonstrates this by writing and performing songs that resonate with the musicians' distinct collective personality while still offering music that boasts mass appeal.-- review by Kristofer Upjohn
