STEVE PORTER PRESENTS PORTERHOUSE VOL 2 (EQ/STOMP)

You regular readers who are familiar with my reviews have at this point had driven home the fact that I'm not particularly enamored of house music. That being said, I must confess to being pleasantly surprised by the music on "Porterhouse Vol. 2" from Steve Porter. This CD goes beyond just having a catchy title. It actually delivers tasty house music. The dynamics, textures, etc., on this CD are bar-raising, showing that more can be done with house music than many house artists are actually doing. There's lots of depth to the sound and there's a fairly strong hook to the music. Porterhouse Vol. 2 steps beyond the dance-floor shaking realm and makes a decent foray into the realm of sitting-at-home listenability. There are a lot of house (and other genres) CDs that could move a dance floor but would wither outside their native setting. Not so here. While Porter hasn't followed house to its full potential he has certainly pointed in the right direction. -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
