ROIR Records' "Essential Dub" is a delicious compilation that brings together a smorgasborg of dub and reggae tracks from such genre gods as Dub Trio, Bad Brains, Bill Laswell and many others. This is a top shelf serving of what this style of music has to offer. The tracks are picked and compiled in such a way that a smooth flow exists from track to track. At the same time, "Essential Dub" features tracks that stand out from their brethren so that while a common vibe exists from start to finish, each song still asserts itself with its creator's personality intact and distinct. The grooves are hooky and the music boasts a solid organic footing with hints of electronic manipulation.
