Dimitri from Paris offers for your musical enlightenment a two-disc batch of disco tracks that likely escaped your notice, even if you've seen Saturday Night Fever a bazillion times. Forget the Bee Gees and Donna Summer. “I Will Survive” may have gotten you through a breakup. But what's going to be your soundtrack for the next cocktail party (assuming obscure disco is the theme of your next cocktail party – and also assuming you throw cocktail parties). Or to hell with the cocktail party. What are you going to listen to the next time you're in a glitter ball groove kinda mood and your bell's been rung enough? What are you going to aurally absorb when next the latest house mix just doesn't raise the roof? Well, perhaps this collection of unheard-of's cobbled together into an interesting comp by our friend Dimitri? A self-confessed used record store cherry picker, Dimitri prides himself on discovering great “new” music. Some people seek out the as-yet-undiscovered new superstar, but Dimitri seeks out oldies that are fresh because they never saturated the market of sound as fun (i.e., they weren't hits and slipped by under the radar). This music was often, according to Dimitri, described back in the day as “sleaze” and played, he says, in the late hours at sexually charged venues. I suppose if I could experience the original pop culture context of this music, I might understand that designation, but to me these songs are simply less ferociously ostentatious, preferring a modicum of decorum, by which I mean they're a tad more laid back than dancefloor shakers like “Stayin' Alive.” But that's no detriment. These tunes have their touch of kitsch, as any offering from this genre does to post-modern ears, but the cool grooves and hint of smooth jazz spice make for some nice night listening.-- review by Kristofer Upjohn
