DUO DYNAMIC - UNREST FOR PEACE (RIVER BEND RECORDS) |
| |

Duo Dynamic – Ray Mathews and J. Kipling – gets going here with some tunes that dare you to try to pigeonhole them. Better get some lube and a shoehorn (and you'd still better hope for divine intervention). “Unrest for Peace” hauls out the smooth jazz, ambient, mid-tempo chillout and more on a successful and seamless fusion of styles. There's oodles of atmosphere here and a sense of lushness generated with as much space and shadow as beat, melody and texture. The spaciousness isn't minimalist but there's no denying the appealing airiness of the compositions. Arid yet juicy, “Unrest for Peace” is a lovely journey into the nebulae. Mathews and Kipling have done an admirable job of covering up the stitches in this ubersuccessful surgery of styles. It encompasses the absorption allure of chillout and smooth jazz's, uh, smoothness (and without the latter's frequent tendency to tilt toward Muzacky personality). Tell your dentist to pipe this into his waiting room instead of that stuff he's dosing you with now (maybe to prepare you for the root canal cuz he's out of Novocaine). Of course, I jest. This music is better than waiting room filler, by a long shot (and, I kind of like some elevator music – which this isn't). -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
