BOB MARLEY & THE WAILERS - ROOTS, ROCK, REMIXED (QUANGO)

(Make sure you notice the five stars above before continuing to read! You’ll have to make it through my initial thoughts before I listened to see what I discovered about this release!) My heart sank into my stomach as I saw what was inside the promo mailing: they hadn’t. Oh, yes, they had. I thought the days of remixing non-electronic artist past albums was something left to the cheesy tribute album labels, but I held in my hands proof this wasn’t so. And hadn’t they been massacred already in various remixes? Was no one immune to corporate copyright holders trying to squeeze another buck off classics that should well be left alone?Being a huge if illiterate Bob Marley and the Wailers fan, it was with great trepidation that I put this blasphemous bit of plastic into my stereo player, and pressed play. And was completely entranced. Not its not trance!! Its dub, or slightly bass heavy but all subtle dance twists and reworkings of such amazing and now fresh sounding standout tunes like “Soul shake down” with Afrodisiac Sound System working their magic, “Sun Shining” remixed by someone named Yes King (maybe someone non-electronic famous, so forgive me if so) and... ok actually the whole disc is just so good, let me list off the rest of who’s on there! 1. Soul Shakedown Party (Afrodisiac Sound System Remix) 2. Lively Up Yourself (Bombay Dub Orchestra Remix) 3. Duppy Conqueror (Fort Knox Five Remix) 4. Sun Is Shining (Yes King Remix) 5. Soul Rebel (Afrodisiac Sound System Remix) 6. African Herbsman (King Kooba Remix) 7. Don't Rock My Boat (STUHR Remix) 8. Small Axe (Paul & Price Remix) 9. Rainbow Country (DJ Spooky's Subliminal Funk Remix) 10. Trenchtown Rock (Trio Elétrico Remix) 11. 400 Years (Jimpster Remix) CD Bonus Track: 12. One Love (Cordovan Remix) You need this for your chillout selection, for your mellow danceparty selection, your driving and want to feel happy selection!! Enough said! -- review by Claire Maxwell
