NUCULTURES - BUTTERFLIES, ZEBRAS, AND MOONBEAMS (1K) |

This Philadelphia collective does a right nice job of bringing together a multiplicity of talents and turning out an album (a two-CD album) that presents a unified artistic front, but executed with a modicum of eclecticism. Electronica and organica make love across the running time of these CDs as loops and electronic beats perform a mating dance with horns and guitars. Folk friendliness greets the ears. Jazz flourishes stir the soul. Pop charm reaches your ears. Classic instrumentation anchors synthesized elements. A variety of vocals call out to the listener. Touches of trip-hop tingle in the listener's ear. This is a batch of nighttime grooves that, while not outright addictive, do offer compelling listening and a strong dash of atmosphere. Lots of creative energy went into the making of this double-disc set; that much is clear. It's a strong outing in the downtempo realm and boasts one of that subgenres more distinctive personalities of late. -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
