BENJY WERTHEIMER AND MICHAEL MANDRELL - NOTES FROM CELTISTAN (WOLF CUB MUSIC)

World music fans should get a kick out of this, though I will offer this much warning: Don't expect the sort of ecstatic genrebending the title might suggest. Now, that said, this really is a pleasant CD and the eastern influences mingle nicely with Celtic flavors. In fact, they mingle surprisingly well. The fusion is so seamless one is almost disappointed not to discover a shocking new blend of world music styles at work here. The two core influences on Wertheimer and Mandrell's work are obvious to the listener; I'm not suggesting otherwise. Yet they are such surprisingly perfect bedfellows that the proceedings simply feel, well natural. For most, that will probably be a good thing. If you're seeking music that's alive with a sense of being groundbreaking, you can go elsewhere. But if you want some easy-on-the-ears world music to chill to, then "Notes from Celtistan" is certainly an apt choice. -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
