DJ HELL - NY MUSCLE (INTERNATIONAL DEEJAY GIGOLO RECORDS) |
| |

Where electroclash became the darling and staple of the uptown cocktail set, DJ Hell’s lugubrious brand of retro has always been more absinthe than martini. So, while you’ve got to respect Hell for sticking to his tripped out guns, NY Muscle’s darker tone is hardly for everyone. The real star here might be Gigolo coconspirator Abe Duque, who produced, mixed and programmed all the tracks. Duque’s own album, So Underground It Hurts, also just released, and its more upbeat vibe would have been welcomed here. As it is, only “Keep On Waiting” with Erland Oye and the Alan Vega collaborations will have the most applicability on dance floors – perhaps a credit to Duque’s touch. Not only is Hell’s stuff downright sinister, it also admittedly feels a bit cobbled together. Tracks like “Follow You” aren’t short on atmosphere, but like so much else on the album it’s a bit threadbare – everything plays off more like an experiment than a fully realized piece of music. NY Muscle might be more than the sum of its parts, however. As a whole, it’s a bleak and hypnotic symphony perfect for coming down off Zoloft. www.djhell.de - www.gigolo-records.de -- review by Yuri Wuensch
