TOTAL SCIENCE PRESENTS BREAKBEAT SCIENCE EXERCISE 6 (BREAKBEAT SCIENCE)

I have a tendency to like a little extra burst of energy in my drum-n-bass. There is DnB out there that kind of qualifies as DnB light. But then again there is heavy drum-n-bass that's heavy to the point of forgetting melodic hooks. Sort of like heavy metal that's more about intensity that melody. There are advantages to both sides. Here's a CD that piques my interest a bit with the lighter - but not fluffier - side of DnB. By lighter I don't mean to suggest there's a lack of energy or groove here. This isn't pussy DnB, but it's not the industrial DnB of Dieselboy either. It brings an interesting melody layer to the mix that snags a level of the listener's musical interest that DnB doesn't always take hold of. Some of it even has a world tinge, which I can appreciate, though it's not on the organic side of things (and, truly, I'd be surprised to expect such in DnB anyway). The beats seem weightless but NOT without substance. The melody line - stronger than what is often available in this genre - adds an extra dimension to it. Greater hooks have been heard in the realm of drum-n-bass but this is still a solid outing. -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
