Girls just wanna have fun, right? Just check out the tune "Pop Music Is Not a Crime" from Freezepop's "Future Future Future Perfect" and you'll catch that vibe. Of course, really, everybody just wants to have fun. And therein lies the hypocrisy of utter rejection of pop music. Sure, it may not be the artistic monolith of, say, art rock, but it's not supposed to be, and it still takes talent to do it right. Truly, "Pop Music Is Not a Crime" could be Freezepop's anthem, both because it's a manifesto of Freezepop's attitude and because it's a solid example of what the band is about musically. It's a "let's party!" exhortation to those who just want to groove to some hooky music and a big "screw you" dis to snobs who sneer at pop. On this song, and the rest, Freezepop displays a sort of walking contradiction ... make that a dancing contradiction. On the one hand, the lyrics are alarmingly matter-of-fact and conversational rather than fluidly poetic. They'd be trite if, well, they weren't. It's deliberate banality is the source of its clever poetry. And the music is quirky yet solidly pop accessible synth pop. At first, one may be startled into a what-the-hell-is-this reaction; you may be inclined to write this off as sophomoric. But when you realize it is intentionally stripped down, the subtlety of its lack of subtlety becomes apparent.
